How inventory works

Fiscal doesn't store a stock figure you can type over. Every document that moves goods writes a line in the stock ledger, and the stock on hand is always the total of those lines.

Stock per warehouse and batch

  • Stock is kept per item, per warehouse and, for batch items, per batch, always in the item's base unit.
  • Only inventory items and inventory assemblies have stock. Services don't.
  • See an item's stock on the Stock and Transactions tabs of the item details, and in the inventory reports.

Documents that move stock

InOutBetween warehouses
Goods receipts, bills, credit notes (returns), adjustments up, assemblies (the finished item) Delivery notes, invoices, vendor credits, adjustments down, usage, assemblies (the materials) Stock transfers, started from an inventory request or directly

Cancelling a document removes its stock movements. A draft moves nothing.

Not enough stock

Unless Allow Negative Stock is on in Preferences, Fiscal won't let a document take out more than the warehouse has, and tells you which item is short.

Packing status

Assemblies that need packing (see Building assemblies and packing) come into stock as Packing In Progress. That stock counts as on hand but can't be sold, and can only be transferred to a packing warehouse (see Warehouses), until it is packed.

Cost

Each stock movement carries its cost, by the item's costing method (moving average or FIFO). The cost of goods sold in your accounts comes from those costs. See Inventory costing.
