Bills of materials
A bill of materials (BOM) is the recipe for an assembly item: which materials, and how much of each, make a given quantity of the finished product.
Open Inventory›Bill of Materials. The item to produce must be an Inventory Assembly item (see Item types).
BOM types
- Production: the materials consumed when you build the item, for example flour, sugar and butter for a cake.
- Packaging: the packing materials used when produced stock is packed, for example boxes and labels. Used by items that require packing (see Packing).
Create a BOM
- Click New. Enter a Code and Name, and choose the BOM Type.
- Choose the Item to Produce, the Output Qty per unit and the Output Unit: how much one run of this recipe makes, for example 1 tray of 24 pieces.
- Add the Material Lines: each component, its unit and quantity per run. Use Add Raw Material (Inline) or Quick Add for materials, and Add Sub-BOM for a component that is itself made from a BOM (for example a dough used in several products).
- Tick Round Down on a line whose material can only be used in whole units, such as boxes.
- Use Copy from... to start from an existing BOM. Make sure Active is on, and save.
The BOM's cost
Select a BOM to see its material lines, the Cost per run (sub-BOMs are costed as finished items taken from stock), the Total BOM Cost, and the full raw material requirement with all sub-BOMs expanded, for information.
Many BOMs at once
- Download Sample, fill it in, and Import from Excel. Export All to Excel downloads every BOM.
- On one BOM, Export and Re-Import Lines let you edit its lines in Excel.
- Copy to Items copies a BOM to other items that don't have one of that type yet, for example the same packaging for every flavour.
